BRANDON, FL — One firefighter was taken to the hospital after collapsing at the scene of a fire in the fellowship hall of New Testament Church at 913 Dew Bloom Road in Brandon on Thursday night.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue were called to the scene at 9:35 p.m. to find the fellowship hall fully involved with flames shooting through the roof. After determining that the building was not occupied, firefighters began battling the flames with a combined ground and elevated attack. The fire was under control in about 20 minutes and completely out in 25 minutes.

During the course of battling the fire, firefighters found and treated one church member who attempted to douse some of the flames with a garden hose and suffered minor injuries and smoke inhalation.

Additionally, one of the firefighters collapsed near his engine away from the flames. His injury does not appear directly related to the fire. He was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

The fellowship hall is not attached to the main church so the fire did not reach the church’s sanctuary.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
